The Ubiquiti USW-WAN is a purpose-built WAN switch designed for high-availability UniFi gateway deployments. Rather than connecting two cloud gateways to a single ISP through separate infrastructure, the USW-WAN handles this in a single 1U rack-mount unit, with two 10G SFP+ ports for the primary and standby UniFi Cloud Gateways running in Shadow mode and a third 10G SFP+ port for the incoming ISP uplink.
Shadow mode pairs a primary and standby gateway so that if the active gateway fails, the standby takes over without manual intervention. The USW-WAN is the purpose-built switching layer that makes this topology work cleanly, eliminating the ISP uplink as a single point of failure and allowing gateway failover to happen transparently to the rest of the network.
A dedicated 1G RJ45 management port provides out-of-band access so the switch can be reached independently of the main data path. Dual internal AC power supplies run from independent inputs, meaning the switch itself stays online even if one power circuit drops. At 20Gbps switching capacity and 15Mpps forwarding rate, the unit is not a bottleneck at 10G WAN speeds.
The USW-WAN is managed through the UniFi Network Application alongside the rest of your UniFi infrastructure.
